Brecht wanted an active type of theatre that could be used as a tool for changing our flawed society. To do this EVERYTHING must be critically looked at/reexamined. Including the mechanics of theatre – naturalism, musicals, opera were trying to pull he wool over people’s eyes through the theatrical devices to cover up scene changes, costume, makeup to make someone into a character.

Epic Theatre Brecht criticizes what he calls “Culinary theatre”. This is theatre which merely gives an experience, mental refreshment as a meal is a bodily restorative.
